Copeland enjoyed something of breakout success when she took over the lead in "Pal Joey" after Eleanor Parker quit just before the play opened in 1976. 2009 found her still treading the boards in Tennessee Williams' "Suddenly Last Summer".

His cult fandom was assured after taking roles in The Rocky Horror Show (on stage and subsequent film). Finally the long gestating collaboration with Jim Steinman became Bat Out of Hell in 1977.
